The only substance to the UN is the building on the East River that houses it. Apart from that distinctive physical presence, it’s a dangerous charade that distorts the reality of foreign affairs and invites suicidal policies.
The currently unfolding fiasco of UN “peacekeeping” in Lebanon is just one more piece of empirical evidence that the UN is worse than useless. Will liberals like John Kerry and Teddy Kennedy ever recognize that clinging to the myth of world order through the UN is like jumping off the Empire State Building using a kleenex as a parachute?
The driving force behind Presidents, past, present, and future, going through the motions with the UN is uninformed public opinion, manipulated by the liberal media and politicians. No one who actually examines the 85-year history of this socialist mythology of world government, first in the League of Nations, now in the UN, can point to any evidence that it works. It’s just a way for the public to stick its head under the covers and hope that the goblins go away.
Nonetheless, impelled by uninformed domestic and world opinion, the United States and Israel have been ensnared in an untenable situation. Relying upon France’s UN promises to lead an international army to disarm Hezbollah, we and Israel agreed to a cease-fire.
As soon as the UN deal was signed, France backed out, and no one else is prepared to take its place. Hezbollah not only is keeping all its weaponry, but is already resupplying its arms and ammunition from Iran via Syria. With the charade of a UN “peace,” all Israeli efforts to enforce the UN-mandated embargo on arms shipments to Hezbollah are being branded by the UN and the world media as unacceptable aggression.
If an effective disarmament and peace-keeping force ever takes the field between Israel and Lebanon, it will be entirely the result of unilateral, behind-the-scenes diplomacy by the United States. The UN, as the proxy for anti-American opinion, will have been only a hindrance.
Meanwhile, emboldened by their survival under Israeli attack, Hezbollah will simply resume bombarding Israel with long-range rockets at a time of their choosing. Don’t be surprised if Iran, as soon as it is able to do so, makes the entirety of Lebanon and its citizens into a huge suicide bomber by arming those rockets with nuclear warheads. So what if that wipes out a few million Muslims, as long as it hurts the United States and incinerates Israel’s Jews? The Iranians have told us that they would welcome catastrophic destruction in order to induce the return of the Twelfth Imam and bring about the predicted world hegemony of Islam.
Liberals continue to insist that Islamic aggression in the Middle East is entirely a product of our troops’ presence in Iraq. If that is true, and if “progressive” doctrine is correct that all international aggressions can be settled by diplomatic conversations in the UN:
Why have earlier UN resolutions calling for disarmament of Hezbollah never been effective?
Why was Saddam Hussein able to flout UN mandates for a dozen years?
How did the UN become the co-perpatrator of the oil-for-food scam, the largest financial crime in history?
Why have the UN and multi-national diplomacy been a complete failure in stopping the Iranian nuclear weapons development program?
All of those things commenced long before 9/11 and our retaliation in Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet liberals see no connection between this pattern and the events of 9/11.
The truth is that the forces of Islamic jihad are simply using the UN and the world’s liberal media as mechanisms to stall Western retaliation while they regroup for the next lethal assault on non-Muslims.
It has long been obvious to people not deluded by the mythology of the socialist religion that it is not prudent to rely for our safety upon a UN dominated by Arab and other third-world countries who are sworn enemies of the United States.
