Democrats were indignant when Republicans called them appeasers. But Islamic jihadists see the congressional election results as an American defeat.
Making the congressional elections a referendum on the Iraq war, as the Democrats did, has far reaching implications. Not the least of them is emboldenment of Islamic jihadists to intensify and to broaden their terrorism, with the expectation that the Democrats will do nothing more menacing than to refer each case to the UN.
A Reuters dispatch dated November 10th is headlined: Khamenei calls elections a victory for Iran.
It continues, "This issue (the elections) is not a purely domestic issue for America, but it is the defeat of Bush’s hawkish policies in the world,” Khamenei said in remarks reported by Iran’s student news agency ISNA on Friday.
“Since Washington’s hostile and hawkish policies have always been against the Iranian nation, this defeat is actually an obvious victory for the Iranian nation.”
“With the scandalous defeat of America’s policies in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Afghanistan, America’s threats are empty threats on an international scale."
Another Reuters dispatch dated November 10th is headlined : Al Qaeda gloats over Rumsfeld
Reuters reports: A purported audio recording by the leader of Iraq’s al Qaeda wing gloated over the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, as a top U.S. general said the military was preparing to recommend strategy changes.
Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, said in the recording posted on the Internet on Friday that the group had 12,000 armed fighters and 10,000 others waiting to be equipped to fight U.S. troops in Iraq.
“I tell the lame duck (U.S. administration) do not rush to escape as did your defense minister...stay on the battle ground,” he said.
He said his group would not rest until it had blown up the presidential mansion in Washington.
“I swear by God we shall not rest from jihad until we...blow up the filthiest house known as the White House,” the voice on the recording said.
One probable reason for no repetition of 9/11 in the United States is the Bush administration’s unexpectedly strong reaction to Al Queda’s attack. Jihadists calculated correctly that new 9/11s would solidify the American’ public behind an aggressive foreign policy.
Jihadists understood that they had only to wait for the American public to revert to pursuit of hedonism and to elect an anti-war Democratic regime.
Before 9/11, Osama Bin Ladin said that the Americans are paper tigers who cannot endure the bloodshed required to fight back against militant Islam. He was surprised when the Bush administration didn’t react to 9/11 as the Clinton administration did when suicide bombers attacked the U.S.S. Cole and killed 17 sailors in 2000.
Then, President Clinton followed the path advocated today by “sensitive” liberals like Senators John Kerry and Teddy Kennedy: treat it as a criminal-law case and dispatch the FBI to investigate and prepare an indictment.
That is evidently what Islamic radicals expect from now on, with a Democratic Congress controlling the military expense purse-strings.
Let’s hope that my analysis is completely wrong. But I won’t be surprised at waves of new terrorist attacks around the world and here in the United States.
