New-Left Foreign Policy

The fecklessness of Obama’s foreign policy actions in part arises from his being nurtured by the ethos of 1960s-1970s new-left student activism.

  1. In faulting Obama for not going after Iran

"which has never deviated from its quest to obtain the capability to produce nuclear weapons,"

one must ask, for instance, why the Bush administration attacked Iraq under the excuse that they "may be working on nuclear weapons," when at that same moment, North Korea was exploding actual nuclear weapons! This irony seems to have escaped the author.

  2. The irony didn't escape me. The points you mention have nothing whatever to do with the point of the posting. Your observations provide no cover or extenuation for the record of Obama's simplistic, futile policies in the international arena.

  3. Thomas,

There was a political cartoon in this morning's paper to the point here, which had the caption,

"Americans want their president to keep them out of wars, but to do it with swagger!"

Over the last six years, the US has gotten out of Iraq and "dodged the bullet" several times in other hot spots, when "sending in the troops" or "bombing" looked very tempting to the more hawkish politicians. On the scale of avoiding more agonizing, debilitating and fruitless involvement in foreign wars, Obama scores an A++.

Perhaps there is a faction who would prefer more "swagger" and brashness in throwing our weight around, but I think Teddy Roosevelt's dictum to "Talk softly" is the more prudent course.

  4. What about the "big stick"?

Obama has busily been discarding our military capabilities.

  5. The idea that the US military is lacking is ludicrous. The US defense budget dwarfs that of other country on earth.
