Doing The Pundit Pounce

Liberal-progressive talk show hosts are jumping all over Mitt Romney’s purported lack of understanding of the historical special relationship between the United States and Great Britain.  This because Romney stated his concern that the security firm hired to protect London during the Olympics had not yet employed a sufficient number of guards.

These pundits wish, at the same time, to overlook Obama’s dumping all over that relationship, as Charles Krauthammer notes:

On the contrary. Obama started his presidency by returning to the British Embassy the bust of Winston Churchill that had graced the Oval Office. Then came the State Department official who denied the very existence of a U.S.-British special relationship, saying: “There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world.”

To be topped off by the slap they received over the Falkland Islands, an issue the Brits had considered closed since they repelled the Argentine invasion there 30 years ago. They were not amused by the Obama administration’s studied neutrality between Britain and Argentina, with both a State Department spokesman and the president ostentatiously employing “Malvinas,” the politically charged Argentine name, interchangeably with “Falklands.” (Although the president flubbed it, calling them the “Maldives,” an Indian Ocean island chain 8,000 miles away.)

  1. Since Romney has run a successful Olympics I would tend to believe his comments about the adequacy of the security force. Besides, such a technical comment does not rise to the level of denigrating the special relationship between the two nations.

For example, a Brit could say that we "have not yet" replaced our incompetent child-president with an adult--but such a remark would be simply constructive criticism, not a denigration of our entire historical connection.

  2. Yes, pres. Obummer should be kinder and friendlier to his cousins, queen Lizzie and sir Winston... and Rush Limbaugh, Brad Pitt, Robert Duvall, Warren Buffett, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin, and the Bushes, too, come to think of it.

Now wouldn't that be a family reunion to buy tickets for the stands or to merely watch on the telly! Better than WWE.

This will be a good excuse to do up the graphs with Obummer's Brit royal cousinage when I get a round tuit, but here are some of the others
just scroll down or search for

  3. Thomas,

I am delighted you quoted Krauthammer in complaining about the media talking heads slamming Romney for his comments about Olympic security. Guess what Krauthammer himself said about Romney's Olympics comments! Krauthammer, didn't mince words!

In astonishment at Romeny's cluelessness, he said Romney's comments were, "Unbelievable, it's beyond human understanding, it's incomprehensible - I'm out of adjectives."
