Nominal Unemployment And Disability Fraud

  1. It used to be all the rage to advocate "employing the disabled." I have seen electronic assembly production staffed by the handicapped, including adult Downs Syndrome individuals, who were thoroughly enjoying the work and the chance to be active and involved. One of the best masonry contractors I know is missing half his left arm but can use shovels, hoes, trowels, and rakes. And of course there are numerous contractors who do great work while collecting disability.

    Mike's column points out the motivation behind the suddenly more liberal payment of disability claims--it makes the unemployment stats look like Obama is actually creating jobs! So expect more of the same!

    This fraud does not lend itself to ten second spots--so most voters will never comprehend it. But Mike's figures--the huge increase in disability rolls in the last couple years is breathtakingly clear--The abuse of the system is so obvious I bet even Mr. Jay would be in favor of correcting the unemployment stats and requiring some kind of follow-up on everyone on disability.
