The View From 1776

Moscow Show Trials Redux

Obama’s shameful campaign to criminalize officials in the Bush administration is reminiscent of Stalin’s purges of his opponents in 1936-38.

  1. Don't you mean the Nuremberg Trials of 1945-46?

  2. No, I do mean the Moscow show trials of 1936-38.

Nuremberg at least presented evidence in open court, something which Obama's henchmen eschew. Nuremberg, however, was based on the shaky ground of so-called international law and established a base for European countries to declare US officials today to be guilty of war crimes and subject to arrest, imprisonment, and trial there.

  3. It is difficult to understate the depravity of John Yoo and Jay Bybee, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney's torture justifiers-in-chief. They are well known for having opened the doors to the war crimes committed by the Bush - Cheney brown shirts.

While the waterboarding technique approved by them is well known, it is less well known that Yoo said that it was OK for a child's testicles to be crushed in the presence of his parents as a method of extracting information.

This conduct, supposedly outlawed at Nuremberg, is usually justified with some kind of bogus "ticking bomb" argument.

This kind of thinking becomes a vicious race to the bottom with your enemy. In trying to prevent a disaster, you suspend or abandon your Christian principles, and in the process, you yourself become a moral monster. At that point, you can't simply blame the despicable enemy for what you've become.

  4. I should have said "difficult to OVERSTATE the depravity"...

    My apologies.

  5. In this post The View shows that it is literally supporting individuals that 'trashed' the Constitution under the Bush administration.

The comparison The View makes to Stalin is pure garbage, garbage and more garbage, like those it makes with Hitler. I am thinking that it makes such stupid claims because it is growing old and is desperate for attention.
