  1. It is interesting to note that the last effort to achieve a "single payer" health system was during the Truman administration, when he had majority American support for his National Health Insurance plan with the single payer feature.

    Ironically, it was the Southern Democrats who lead the effort to defeat that proposal, fearing that it would lead to integrated hospitals, which were still segregated at the time.

    Republican H. Styles Bridges of New Hampshire was a shining star of those days and sponsored the National Heart Institute Act in 1948 and the Omnibus Medical Research Act of 1950 to fund medical research institutes.
