For anyone who seeks a literally overwhelming case to buttress the conviction that the United States was founded and governed, at least until 1933, as a Christian nation, take a look at David Barton’s “Original Intent: The Courts, the Constitution, & Religion.”  It contains 350 pages of quotations from the leading statesmen of the founding era, all supporting the essentiality of religion in our government of English-style individualism under a Federal republic. 

In today’s hypersensitive atmosphere of “tolerance,” offending somebody by speaking the truth is a hate crime more heinous than murder.  But, as Casey Stengel (maybe it was Yogi Berra?) said, “You could look it up.”
