Liberal-Progressives Will Teach Us What To Think

‘Academic Justice’: Inside the Abyss of the Academy, which appears on the FrontPage website, conjures up visions of ruthless, all-encompassing political rule by George Orwell’s Big Brother in the novel 1984.  Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon, based on Stalin’s 1938 purges of dissidents in the Moscow show trials, also comes to mind.

The common theme is that no one, under liberal-progressive ‘social justice,’ can be allowed to express opinions other than those approved by the ruling intellectual elite.  Anyone who ventures to question the elite must be liquidated, or at least, in the manner of the Democrat/Socialist Party, tarred with the brush of treason and racism.

The Cost Of Junk Science

BASF, the world’s biggest chemical maker by sales, will make the most of its capital investments outside Europe for the first time, as it responds to the continent’s higher energy costs and growing demand in North America and emerging markets such as China. “In Europe we have the most expensive energy and we are not prepared to exploit the energy resources we have, such as shale gas. We have relatively high wage costs and we have a stagnating market,” said Kurt Bock, BASF chief executive. Mr Bock has been a prominent critic of German and European Union climate and energy policies, arguing these are ineffective, raise costs for industry and cause job losses.—Chris Bryant, Financial Times, 26 February

If anyone thinks Germany’s move to renewable energies has been a success, you may want to take a few minutes and read what center-left news weekly Der Spiegel has just written. Overall Germany’s energy revolution has made the country’s energy unaffordable, unreliable and has ruined its own idyllic landscape, and ravaged rainforests abroad as well. “Rising energy costs are becoming a problem for more and more citizens in Germany. Just from 2008 to 20111 the share of energy-poor households in the Federal Republic jumped from 13.8 to 17 percent.” Much of the rapid increase in energy prices is owing to Germany’s growth in expensive wind and solar energy. Ironically, despite more than 20% of Germany’s energy now being supplied by renewables, CO2 emissions have been rising just the same.—Pierre Gosselin, No Tricks Zone, 24 February 2014

Revelations From Our Pagan Weather Gods

Today’s frenzied adulation for ‘global warming’ or ‘climate change’ is a throw-back to primitive paganism.

The tribal shaman was thought to have power because he could incant a secret name for an object or phenomenon.  In the same way today’s radical environmentalists - those of the ClimateGate variety, President Obama, and John Kerry - believe that giving names to climate phenomena and creating fantastical computer models gives them special power over the future of earth’s weather.

To support their claims to the power of omniscience they invoke a non-existent concurrence by ‘all the world’s scientists.’

Minimum Wage Laws Benefit Special Interests, Not The Poor

Read this analysis from the Mises Daily blog.

Virtually everyone who supports higher minimum wages asserts their intent to help working families. But it may frequently be a false compassion whose common denominator is advancing one’s own self-interest while harming working families. That would also explain why so many are unwilling to seriously consider whether such compassion actually works, rather than just sounding good.

Our Unconstitutionally Established Religion Of Socialism

Is socialism a secular religion?  And is inculcating it at public expense in our schools violating the First Amendment’s prohibition of establishing a religion?

Living On The Dole Or In Debt

Liberal-progressives can take pleasure in the Wall Street Journal’s report today that U.S. household debt posted the largest quarterly increase since before the recession.  This while the country remains adrift in the doldrums of the worst economic “recovery” since the liberal-progressive Great Depression of the 1930s.

Given the liberal-progressive apotheosis of self-indulgence and immoral hedonism, it’s not surprising.  The Federal Reserve has been lavishing fiat money on the stock market, aiming to create a “wealth effect” that will induce people to resume their profligate use of debt that created the housing bubble and implosion of the banking system in 2007-2008.

Rising household debt represents continuation of the long-term trend away from the ethos of hard work and savings for a better future, a trend that gladdens the hearts of liberal-progressive-socialists whose religious catechism includes Keynesian economic doctrine.  Our educational system, from grade school to college, has for more than five decades inculcated the unconstitutionally established national religion of socialism: the belief that saving causes recessions, that capitalism is no more than greed and anti-social competitiveness, that only the collectivized, all-powerful national political state can dispense social justice.

Is The Constitution No More Than Whatever Public Opinion Will Tolerate?

Liberal-progressive legal theorists have in recent decades touted the conception that the delegates who wrote the Constitution in 1787 didn’t really mean to make amending the Constitution so difficult.  Evolving public opinion does the job without formal amendments.
