As noted in Figures Don’t Lie, But Liars Can Figure, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has an irresistible urge to concoct phony arguments and to misquote numbers and speech, whenever he has an opportunity to promote socialism.
In the New York Times, of all places, Greg Mankiw exposes the phony numbers behind scare tactics of Mr. Krugman and his fellow liberals, who urgently desire a socialized national health care system.
Professor Mankiw, a member of the Harvard economics faculty, was President George Bush’s economic advisor.
Among other things, he explains, the longer life span in Canada has nothing to do with health care. Ours is shorter because so many young black and Hispanic men kill each other and because we have far more automobile accidents.
Similarly, the higher infant mortality rate in the United States results, not from poor medical care, but from the much higher teen pregnancy among unwed mothers. A higher percentage of births to teens are underweight, raising the mortality rates.
