A reader asks what can be done to counter the fog of illusion that shrouds our political landscape.

Responding to Political Double-Talk: Lying With a Straight Face, a reader emailed this lament:
What can we do to take back our quickly diminishing free republic? Even Republicans like John McCain are only nominally Republican. The GOP continues to let liberals walk all over them, even when they are in the minority. Sometimes I think that the GOP might be starting to favor big government after all. Is this the case? Why do the liberals get away with lies and fabrications? Why are the people of this country so timid? Will it come to revolution? Revolution will be hard if they succeed in taking my guns.
My reply:
The short answer is that very little can be done in less than a generation or two, because the tidal wave propelling liberal-socialism and its double-talk is education.
Credit must be given to liberal-socialists, in particular to John Dewey, for their foresight. In the last decades of the 19th century they recognized that the religion, secular or spiritual, that captures the minds of the young will ultimately prevail. After a century of unremitting effort to subvert education, the secular religion of socialism is triumphant.
The historical background and process of this triumph is covered more fully in The Corruption of Public Education: How It Happened.
In a Federal republic of the sort structured by the Constitution in 1787, we can’t simply purge socialist teachers and burn books expounding the false scientism of atheism and Darwinian evolution (for more on the critical role of Darwinian evolution in propagating socialism, see Darwinian Evolution Undermines the Constitution).
What we can reasonably demand is that both sides of the argument be fairly presented to students at all levels of education. I am confident that, if students understand that liberal “social justice” unavoidably requires surrender of personal political liberties to intellectual councils and bureaucratic administrators, they will turn to the truth as it was known in 1776 and 1787. I am confident that students will repudiate liberal-socialism when they understand that, without it, the world would not have suffered the savagery of Napoleon’s military subjugation of Continental Europe, Lenin’s Soviet Russia, Mussolini’s Fascist State Corporatism, and Hitler’s Third Reich, all of which were based on the doctrines of socialist collectivism.
Getting to that point is the struggle to which we must commit ourselves. Steps that must be taken include getting the Federal government entirely out of education. This means no role for the Feds in establishing curricula or selecting textbooks. It means zero Federal funding for elementary and secondary schools and zero funding for any purpose to colleges and universities.
Remember that it was not until the mid-1960s under President Johnson’s full-bore socialism of the Great Society that the Federal government wrapped its venomous tentacles around all of education.
If there is no Federal funding to education, the demonic influence of teachers unions will be exorcised, and parents will retake control of their own schools, demanding that real subject matter be taught effectively. Local school districts will be markedly less willing to spend their own tax dollars for multi-cultural education that denigrates the United States and its historical ethos of personal moral responsibility. Local school districts will give short shrift to endless experimentation with “methodologies” and will insist upon hiring teachers knowledgeable in their assigned subjects. The emphasis will revert from phony “self-esteem” to real learning and accomplishment, the only true route to self-esteem.
Most importantly, given the tsunami of immigrants who come from cultures very different from our traditions, real education will again become a melting pot that can help assimilate those immigrants’ children and, as happened before the First World War, rapidly make them into English-speaking Americans.
True equality, an equal chance to succeed and to better one’s lot in life, is far more likely if immigrants and minorities can get a real education.
