Liberalism Embraces the Aryan Master Race Theory

“Scientific” implications of Darwinian evolution are utterly barbaric.

————
Larry Auster’s View From The Right gives us a link to The Truth About “Inherit The Wind”, a 1997 article in First Things First, by Carol Inannone, an instructor at New York University.

Her article catalogs the many distortions and outright falsehoods about William Jennings Bryan and the notorious Scopes “monkey” trial that are projected by the much praised Broadway play, later movie, “Inherit the Wind.”

Just as Michael Moore’s “documentaries” and Oliver Stone’s “historical” movies such as “JFK” have deluded American students by depicting a phony version of history, “Inherit the Wind” fictionalizes William Jennings Bryan, presenting him as an ignorant, Christian-fundamentalist buffoon.

The Broadway play was a liberal-socialist piece of propaganda based on an anti-religious project by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), in the first decade after its founding for the purpose of protecting socialists and anarchists who attempted to sabotage America’s military preparations for the First World War in 1916-18.

In 1925 the ACLU literally staged the famous ?monkey trial,? paying John T. Scopes to challenge Tennessee law by teaching evolution in a public school.  Scopes?s defense was handled by Clarence Darrow, an ACLU attorney.  The trial had little to do with the advancement of science.  ACLU leader Walter Nelles explained that the purpose was to discredit traditional American views that were ?? a rearguard action, protesting the advance of science, secularism, cultural pluralism and changing sexual mores.?

In subsequent years, liberal novelists, playwrights and TV and movie screen writers and producers have repeatedly memorialized the trial, always depicting the ACLU?s Clarence Darrow as the only man of intelligence and integrity on the scene.  His opposing attorney, William Jennings Bryan, is ridiculed as an ignorant dolt, because he believed in the literal truth of the Bible.

The audience is not told, of course, that at the trial Bryan projected a highly sophisticated understanding of Biblical scripture and that he quite effectively skewered ACLU attorney Clarence Darrow for his defense earlier of the notorious murderers Leopold and Loeb on the grounds that modern philosophy, of which Darwinian evolution was a critical part, made religious morality outmoded and reduced human conduct to survival of the fittest.

Nor do the playwrights inform the audience that William Jennings Bryan was one of the most famous orators in American history, that he was a member of Congress, that he was thrice the Democratic Party?s Presidential candidate, that it was his influence that secured the Democratic Presidential nomination for Woodrow Wilson in 1912, and that he was Secretary of State in Wilson?s first administration.

Young viewers are left with the indelible impression that no intelligent, decent person would have anything to do with religious morality, because it stands in opposition to ?progress,? to all that is good and true.

Why would the ACLU be so concerned about attacking anything that stood in the way of ?the advance of science, secularism, cultural pluralism and changing sexual mores??  Why was this, in 1925 and still today, so important to liberals that they have relentlessly focused their energies on discrediting religion and personal morality (always under the specious cloak of separation-of-church-and-state)?

The answer lies in their passionate faith that secular socialism is the only path to a just political society.  The ACLU?s connection is that it was founded solely and expressly to defend socialism and anarchism by attacking the Judeo-Christian tradition upon which the United States had been founded.  Belittling any doctrine other than Darwinian evolutionary theory is a way to identify American religious and moral traditions with ignorance and ipso facto to propagandize for the secular materialism of liberal-socialism.

During the trial, Bryan spelled out these implications.  One of the most appalling of the doctrines directly related to Darwinian evolution was the eugenics movement, founded in 1885 by Charles Darwin?s cousin, Sir Francis Galton.  Eugenics was defined by Galton as, ?the study of the agencies under social control which may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations physically or mentally.?  Not only is the socialized state to regulate all economic activity, but also to subject marriage and procreation to technocratic control in the interests of perfecting society, a sweeping power that annihilates individuality.

Various eugenics measures were tried in the United States early in the 20th century.  Laws in some states permitted forcible sterilization of women when authorities decided that their personality traits, if passed on to their children, would interfere with a scientifically-planned, collectivized society.  Well-intentioned Madison Grant, an influential director of the American Museum of Natural History and a founder of the Bronx Zoo, was president of the American Eugenics Society; activist-President Theodore Roosevelt was among its prominent members.  Eugenics was later the basis for the Nazi regime?s master-race theories and for its restricting marriage to men and women of suitable aryan pedigree.

It is, in fact, no stretch to assert that the ACLU and their liberal supporters gave direct support to the decade-later appearance of Hitler’s National Socialist theories about the superiority of the Aryan race and the need to exterminate the Jews, in order to purify the German racial stock.  Eugenics was being taught, in 1925, as accepted scientific methodology and an integral part of Darwinian evolution.

The text book used by John T. Scopes in teaching Darwinian evolution was “Hunter’s Civic Biology”  The following quotations from that text are found on pages 261-265:

“Improvement of Man. ? If the stock of domesticated animals can be improved, it is not unfair to ask if the health and vigor of the future generations of men and women on the earth might not be improved by applying to them the laws of selection. This improvement of the future race has a number of factors in which we as individuals may play a part. These are personal hygiene, selection of healthy mates, and the betterment of the environment.

“Eugenics. ? When people marry there are certain things that the individual as well as the race should demand. The most important of these is freedom from germ diseases which might be handed down to the offspring. Tuberculosis, syphilis, that dread disease which cripples and kills hundreds of thousands of innocent children, epilepsy, and feeble-mindedness are handicaps which it is not only unfair but criminal to hand down to posterity. The science of being well born is called eugenics….

“Parasitism and its Cost to Society. ? Hundreds of families such as those described above [the fictional Jukes and Kallicaks] exist today, spreading disease, immorality, and crime to all parts of this country. The cost to society of such families is very severe. Just as certain animals or plants become parasitic on other plants or animals, these families have become parasitic on society. They not only do harm to others by corrupting, stealing, or spreading disease, but they are actually protected and cared for by the state out of public money. Largely for them the poorhouse and the asylum exist. They take from society, but they give nothing in return. They are true parasites.

“The Remedy. ? If such people were lower animals, we would probably kill them off to prevent them from spreading. Humanity will not allow this, but we do have the remedy of separating the sexes in asylums or other places and in various ways preventing intermarriage and the possibilities of perpetuating such a low and degenerate race. Remedies of this sort have been tried successfully in Europe and are now meeting with some success in this country.”

This is the inherent implication of the liberal-socialism championed by the ACLU as “scientific” truth and social progress.  Clinging to their faith in secular materialism, liberals in recent years have defended abortion as a modern-day form of eugenics.
