Steve Kellmeyer presents a specifically Roman Catholic view of present-day secularity and its parallels in history. 

One point he touches upon deserves more emphasis:  the civilizing role in Western history of the Roman Catholic Church.  After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Church was the sole repository and preserver of education, law, and the institutions of charity and medical care.
